Replicate alternative for image generation APIs
Replicate is a platform where models are run through an HTTP API: thousands of community models and more than a hundred official ones. Below are the prices for our models from their public pages and the terms that affect your choice.
A Rendergrid article. We’re one of the parties in this comparison, so the Replicate figures come only from its public pages, each with a link and a date, and below we say separately when Replicate is the better choice. How we check and correct
01Who it is
What Replicate is
Briefly, and only from their own pages. Website: replicate.com.
Replicate (replicate.com) is a platform where models are run through an HTTP API. The pricing page talks about thousands of open community models, and the documentation about more than a hundred official models with a predictable price: per output image, per second of video, or per token.
A request creates a “prediction”: asynchronous by default, with polling or a webhook; the Prefer: wait header holds the connection until the result is ready (60 seconds by default). For the Google and OpenAI models in our table, the price on the page is given per output image.

The difference is measured from the larger of the two prices, rounded down to a whole percent. The “≈” sign is an estimate that the provider’s own page gives. For GPT Image, quality and size differ between providers: each one’s conditions are in the footnote. We compare prices, not image quality. Nano Banana Flash, Nano Banana 2 Lite, and GPT Image 2 HD are not in the table: we haven’t checked the provider’s prices for them. Our own prices and the official Google and OpenAI prices are on the “Pricing” page.
03Terms
Payment, starter credits, and operating mode
What Replicate’s pages say, next to our terms. Where a page is silent, we say so.
Terms: Replicate and Rendergrid
| Condition | Replicate | Rendergrid |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | Prepaid credit: you buy credit first, and spending is deducted from it. The credit is valid for 1 year and isn’t refunded; there’s an automatic top-up (threshold from $5, amount from $15). Which payment methods they accept is not named on the checked pagessource | USDT (crypto top-up): the full amount sent is credited to the balance |
| Credits at no charge | not checked: the home page has a button to start at no charge, and the size of a starter balance is not named on the pages | There’s no trial balance |
| Synchronous or asynchronous | Asynchronous by default: a prediction is created, and the result comes through polling or a webhook. Synchronous mode is the Prefer: wait header (it waits 60 seconds by default; if it doesn’t finish in time, an unfinished prediction comes back)source | Asynchronous: POST returns 202 and an ID; the result comes through polling GET /creations/ |
| Webhooks | Yes: the webhook field in the request and the event filter webhook_events_filter (start, output, logs, completed); the delivery is signed (the webhook-id, webhook-timestamp, and webhook-signature headers); on a resend, webhook-id stays the samesource 1 source 2 | Yes: webhook_url in every request; the creation.completed and creation.failed events; an HMAC-SHA256 signature over the timestamp and the whole request body |
| Failed request | For all models: if a run ends in an error, nothing is charged. A canceled run of an official model may be chargedsource | If a generation fails, the charge is returned to the balance automatically; a declined request is refunded the same way |
| Limits | Creating a prediction: 600 requests per minute; other requests: 3,000 per minute; as the balance approaches zero, the limits tighten; a credit with no payment method attached: 1 request per second and no more than 6 per minutesource | By default for a new account: 120 requests per minute and up to 100 generations queued or running; account limits can be adjusted to match your traffic |
| Result storage | For requests through the API, the input data, the result, files, and logs are deleted after an hour by defaultsource | Result files are stored for one day |

04Strengths
Where we’re stronger, and where Replicate is
Only what can be verified from public pages and our documentation.
Where Rendergrid is stronger
- Result files stay with us for a day; at Replicate, for requests through the API, for an hour: to avoid losing the image, you have to take it right away or accept a webhook.
- A common request format for all ten models: model, prompt, aspect_ratio, resolution. At Replicate the fields depend on the model: for Nano Banana, resolution; for GPT Image, pixel sizes in aspect_ratio and a separate quality field.
- The webhook retry schedule is named in the documentation: up to five attempts with pauses of 60, 120, 240, and 480 seconds, and the delivery identifier doesn’t change. In the Replicate pages we checked, the retry schedule is not named.
Where Replicate is stronger
- The catalog is wider: thousands of community models and more than a hundred official ones.
- The request-creation limit is higher than our default: 600 per minute against 120.
- A synchronous mode with one header: Prefer: wait returns the finished result in the response to the request.
- GPT Image 2 has three qualities and GPT Image 2.5 has five; low costs $0.012 on their pages.
- The webhook_events_filter field lets you receive only the events you need (start, output, logs, completed).
05Choosing
When to pick Replicate instead
We write this page as a participant in the comparison, so we name separately the cases where Replicate suits you better.
Pick Replicate if
- You need a very broad catalog of models, including open ones, run through an HTTP API.
- You need a synchronous call that waits within one request.
- You need a request-creation limit above 120 per minute (our default).
- You need GPT Image’s quality options and the low draft mode.
06Migration
Migrating to Rendergrid in three steps
If you decide to give it a try, here is what to change in the code. Parameters and responses are in the documentation.
Key and address
At Replicate, requests go to https://
api.replicate.com/ v1/ models/ <owner>/ <model>/ predictions with an Authorization: Bearer header. For us it is https:// api.rendergrid.io/ api/ public/ v1 with the same Authorization: Bearer header (or X-API-Key). Request
Instead of a body of {"input": {...}}, call POST /images/
generate: model, prompt, aspect_ratio, and resolution sit at the root of the JSON body; the webhook is set with the webhook_url field instead of webhook and webhook_events_filter. We don’t need the Prefer: wait header, since the response is always asynchronous. Add X-Idempotency-Key. Result
Instead of a prediction with the statuses starting, processing, and succeeded, save the ID from the 202 response and poll GET /creations/
{id} (queued, processing, completed, and failed; links in result_urls) or accept the creation.completed webhook. Our files are kept for a day, not an hour.
IDEMPOTENCY_KEY="$(uuidgen)"
curl -X POST https://api.rendergrid.io/api/public/v1/images/generate \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $RENDERGRID_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "X-Idempotency-Key: $IDEMPOTENCY_KEY" \
-d '{
"model": "nano-banana-2",
"prompt": "a ceramic mug on a marble table",
"resolution": "2K",
"aspect_ratio": "1:1"
}'
