Kie.ai alternative: Rendergrid
Kie.ai is an API platform with images, video, music, and chat under one key and one credit balance. Below are the prices for our models from their public pages, the terms, and the cases when theirs is the better choice.
A Rendergrid article. We’re one of the parties in this comparison, so the Kie.ai figures come only from its public pages, each with a link and a date, and below we say separately when Kie.ai is the better choice. How we check and correct
01Who it is
What Kie.ai is
Briefly, and only from their own pages. Website: kie.ai.
Kie.ai (kie.ai) is a platform with an API for images, video, music, and chat: one key and one credit balance for all models. The refund page names the legal entity NEXUSAI SERVICES LLC (Denver, USA).
Images there are made asynchronously: you create a task and collect the result by polling or through a callback. Prices are stated in credits, but the model pages convert the credits to dollars, and those are the amounts we took for the table.

The difference is measured from the larger of the two prices, rounded down to a whole percent. The “≈” sign is an estimate that the provider’s own page gives. For GPT Image, quality and size differ between providers: each one’s conditions are in the footnote. We compare prices, not image quality. Nano Banana Flash, Nano Banana 2 Lite, and GPT Image 2 HD are not in the table: we haven’t checked the provider’s prices for them. Our own prices and the official Google and OpenAI prices are on the “Pricing” page.
03Terms
Payment, starter credits, and operating mode
What Kie.ai’s pages say, next to our terms. Where a page is silent, we say so.
Terms: Kie.ai and Rendergrid
| Condition | Kie.ai | Rendergrid |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | not checked: their payment page is built by a script, and the text names no payment methods | USDT (crypto top-up): the full amount sent is credited to the balance |
| Credits at no charge | 80 credits at no charge for new userssource | There’s no trial balance |
| Synchronous or asynchronous | Asynchronous: POST /api/ | Asynchronous: POST returns 202 and an ID; the result comes through polling GET /creations/ |
| Webhooks | Yes: callBackUrl in the request; the HMAC signature is turned on in the settings, is computed from the taskId and a timestamp, and doesn’t cover the request bodysource | Yes: webhook_url in every request; the creation.completed and creation.failed events; an HMAC-SHA256 signature over the timestamp and the whole request body |
| Failed request | Not charged for failed tasks (their words: “Failed tasks are not charged”)source | If a generation fails, the charge is returned to the balance automatically; a declined request is refunded the same way |
| Limits | 20 new requests per 10 seconds per account (up to 120 per minute), no hard limit on concurrent tasks; more on request to supportsource 1 source 2 | By default for a new account: 120 requests per minute and up to 100 generations queued or running; account limits can be adjusted to match your traffic |

Also on their pages
- Credits don’t expire; the refund page says a refund is possible by an email sent from the account. source 1 source 2
- For companies there are invoices: after a top-up, the invoice is generated on the billing page. source
- For large top-ups they add +10% credits (the example on their page is a $1,250 top-up). source
Our terms in detail are in the documentation.
04Strengths
Where we’re stronger, and where Kie.ai is
Only what can be verified from public pages and our documentation.
Where Rendergrid is stronger
- The price is in dollars per image and resolution, with no credits and no conversions: for example, Nano Banana Pro at 1K costs $0.04.
- The webhook signature is computed over the timestamp and the whole request body. In Kie.ai’s documentation, the signature is computed from the taskId and a timestamp and doesn’t cover the body: they suggest re-reading the result with a status request.
- You can pass an idempotency key, X-Idempotency-Key, in a request: once the acceptance response is saved, repeating it with the same key and the same API key returns the same generation instead of creating a new one. The Kie.ai pages we reviewed have no such field.
- GET /models returns the current prices for your own account, including agreed personal ones.
Where Kie.ai is stronger
- 80 credits at no charge to try the service. We have no trial balance.
- Result files are stored for 14 days; ours are stored for one day.
- Credits don’t expire, and there are invoices for companies.
- Video, music, and chat sit in the same balance next to images.
- Each model’s page has a playground for test requests; support works in Discord and Telegram groups.
05Choosing
When to pick Kie.ai instead
We write this page as a participant in the comparison, so we name separately the cases where Kie.ai suits you better.
Pick Kie.ai if
- You need video, music, or chat in the same balance as your images.
- You want to try the models for free first, on starter credits.
- Results must stay with the provider for longer than a day: Kie.ai stores files for 14 days.
- You pay as a company and their invoice process works for you.
- You’re used to working with support in their Discord and Telegram groups.
06Migration
Migrating to Rendergrid in three steps
If you decide to give it a try, here is what to change in the code. Parameters and responses are in the documentation.
Key and address
At Kie.ai, requests go to https://
api.kie.ai with an Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY header. For us it is https:// api.rendergrid.io/ api/ public/ v1 with the same Authorization: Bearer header (or X-API-Key). You create the key in the portal. Request
Instead of POST /api/
v1/ jobs/ createTask with a nested input, call POST /images/ generate: the model, prompt, aspect_ratio, and resolution fields sit at the root of the body, and webhook_url replaces callBackUrl. Add X-Idempotency-Key. Result
Instead of taskId and recordInfo, save the ID from the 202 response and poll GET /creations/
{id} (queued, processing, completed, and failed; links in result_urls) or accept the creation.completed webhook. Our files are kept for a day, so download them right away.
IDEMPOTENCY_KEY="$(uuidgen)"
curl -X POST https://api.rendergrid.io/api/public/v1/images/generate \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $RENDERGRID_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "X-Idempotency-Key: $IDEMPOTENCY_KEY" \
-d '{
"model": "nano-banana-2",
"prompt": "a ceramic mug on a marble table",
"resolution": "2K",
"aspect_ratio": "1:1"
}'
